The Odyssey Unit Plan (3 Weeks)
In this unit plan we focus on the idea of heroism, both in a personal sense, how heroism is depicted in The Odyssey and modern ideas of heroism. This unit takes place over three-four weeks and is designed to facilitate the reading and discussion of The Odyssey. Students will perform research on a modern day hero and compare him to Odysseus from The Odyssey at the end of the unit, finishing with their personal definition of heroism.
Students will learn about epic heros and epic poetry (InTASC Standard 4l). Students are asked to research and compare modern heroes to Odysseus and present their findings in a brief Powerpoint presentation (InTASC Standard 5c, 6r, ISTE.NETS-T Standard 2d). Students are encouraged to use one another to understand and discuss the content they are being asked to master, and discussion groups are an important method of acehieving that goal (InTASC Standard 5e).
