Themes in Romeo and Juliet Essay
The essay on Romeo and Juliet was assigned after reading the play and taking a test to gauge reading comprehension and identification of literary devices. Students had been following one of five major themes of the play throughout the reading, and the essay was designed to test their ability to discuss their observations. The handout was used as an outline and a writing guide to get students prepared to write their essays. Students had some practice with writing thesis statements and defending them, though they had done so mostly in the context of argumentative essays before this unit. In the conclusion, students were asked to explain the importance of their theme and connect it to the real or modern-day world, taking their knowledge into the real world and considering the important of the theme they had just written about.
The writing assignment handout served both as a writing guide as students worked on their essays analyzing a major theme in Romeo and Juliet, and as a practice and reminder of how to write thesis statements and organize essays (InTASC Standard 7a). This essay followed a test so that students were tested on their reading comprehension of the play as well as their ability to intelligently analyze and discuss it (InTASC Standard 6t, 6v).
