Romeo and Juliet: The Remake Performance Assessment
This performance assessment was used at the end of a unit on William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Students were asked to rewrite one of four major scenes from the play, with attention to the characters and plot points in that scene. They were asked to translate the language and the scene into a modern context, essentially, to put the play into their own words. They were put into teacher-assigned groups and asked to become a film crew, with each group member having a specific individual part of the project as well as their part in the group-made movie.
This assessment allowed for students to play to their strengths and take on an individual role that matched their learning needs. There were opportunities for students who enjoy writing, technology, art, and performance to use their skills to showcase their knowledge of the content (InTASC Standard 2a). Students were encouraged to draw from their funds of knowledge in order to place the play into context in their view of the world so that rater than just reading a really old book, students were actually able to bring the story forward into their own lives and their own schema (InTASC Standard 2j, 4d). Studetns worked in collaborative groups, created dynamic projects of their own creation, and shared those projects with one another (InTASC Standard 3o, 5c, 5f). Students learned to use video recording and editing software (ISTE.NETS-T Standard 1a, 2a, 2c, 2d).
