Expectancy Sheet
The following Course Expectancy Sheet is a document I prepared that outlines the rules and regulations to be followed in my classroom. It is intended to act as a resource document for students who need to remember the policies that I will follow in my classroom, including the steps I will take to deal with behavioral infractions, how I will respond to positive classroom behavior, homework and late work policies, and tardy and attendance procedures. It gives a brief outline of the units to be covered in the semester, and it also provides a list of materials students will need to succeed in my class. Because they have to sign it, and have their parents sign it, this document acts as a contract between teacher and student so that I could ensure each student heard the rules at least once in a formal setting. I handed this out to all of my students on the first day of the new semester and went over it in detail with them. Then, if there were any questions or confusion later, the students could refer back to the sheet.
The Expectancy Sheet promotes respect and equality of treatment for all students in the classroom. It also sets up rules and norms that will be followed throughout the school year, providing structure for the classroom discipline system. (InTASC Standard 2n, Standard 3:k, j, q). The website, which will contain important classroom information available to both students and their parents, promotes communication between parents and the classroom, as well as demonstrating a use of technology (InTASC Standard 3a, Standard 8r, ISTE NETS-T Standard 3c). The quiz and parent contract at the end of the Expectancy Sheet helps parents become actively involved in their students’ learning, and to be aware of what is going on in the classroom (InTASC Standard 3:c, n).
