Lesson Plan: Advertising in the 2012 Presidential Campaign
This lesson plan covers two days in which students were asked to look at the advertising strategies of both 2012 presidential candidates and evaluate the effectiveness of Romney and Obama’s campaigns. The students had already read about both candidates and written persuasive paragraphs defending their choice for president, and they were able to apply that knowledge to this lesson as well. This lesson was taught a few weeks before the election, covering advertisements that the students had been seeing at home, but asking them to look more critically at both the presidential advertising strategies and advertising strategies in general.
Throughout this lesson plan students learned how various aspects of advertising work. They were encouraged to think about advertisements that they are already familiar with and to challenge their personal beliefs about both candidates in order to objectively analyze their campaign strategies. (InTASC Standard 1i). The wide variety of ads we talked about allowed for students to see advertising strategies at work in print ads as well as television commercials so that students were allowed to draw upon their strengths and weaknesses throughout the lesson (InTASC Standard 2g). the multiple ways used to practice analyzing advertisements helped solidify students’ awareness of how various elements work in all advertisements and visual media (InTASC Standard 4a, ISTE.NETS-T Standard 2a).
